At first glance, I'll Push You sounds like a story about one extraordinary act of friendship: Patrick Gray pushing his lifelong friend Justin Skeesuck, who had lost the use of his arms and legs, five hundred miles along Spain's Camino de Santiago. That would already be enough to make this an inspiring book. But the deeper strength of the story is that it refuses to reduce friendship to one person being strong and the other being carried.
Patrick may be the one behind the wheelchair, but both men are pushing each other. Justin pushes Patrick past fear, exhaustion, and the limits of what he believes he can endure. Patrick gives Justin the physical strength he needs to pursue something that would otherwise seem impossible. Along the way, strangers step in to help them over terrain they could not cross alone. The journey becomes a picture of how God often works through community: not by making us completely self-sufficient, but by teaching us to give, receive, trust, and keep moving together.
What stayed with me most is the simplicity of Patrick's response when Justin first suggested the journey: "I'll push you." He did not begin with every reason it might fail. He began with commitment. There is something deeply challenging in that. Many of us want to be loyal, courageous, and sacrificial, but we prefer those qualities when they remain convenient. This story shows what love looks like when it becomes physical, costly, repetitive, and exhausting.
I'll Push You is moving without depending entirely on sentiment. It is about disability and perseverance, but even more, it is about friendship, humility, faith, and our need for one another. It left me asking not only who would push me when the road becomes difficult, but whose burden I am willing to help carry.
